Sydney Weekender is going to the dogs! Resident ‘action man’ Pete is hitting the trail behind a pack of wolves (well, they are huskies actually but they look like wolves) on a sled dog ride with Malusky Huskies in the Hunter Valley.

Malusky Kennels have been involved with sled dogs and sled dog racing since 1995. They began with one Alaskan Malamute, and grew to support the whole family’s interest in the sport. Currently they have 15 Siberian Huskies, 5 Alaskan Huskies and 1 Alaskan Malamute.
Malusky Team are founding members of the Hunter Valley Mushers. Hunter Valley Mushers is a group of mushing enthusiasts who have been organizing their own successful sled dog race each July since 2002.
After what they saw and experienced overseas, they were confident they would be able to offer the only sled dog rides available in Australia. So after much research, planning, importation of specifically designed carts for sled dog rides and a lot of set up work, they are now operational.
Malusky Kennels are registered breeders of purebred Siberian Huskies, and breed registered puppies as well as provide puppies as pets. Occasionally mature dogs, that are not racing, are available for suitable homes.

They do have a puppy waiting list. The order of choice of puppies is determined on date of receipt of your deposit.
Rides operate from May to October and are dependent on suitable weather conditions. They run in the coolest temperatures of early morning or early evening.
Get ready for a ride with a difference. Under the control of the musher, you will see the forest from a completely different perspective.
On the day of your sledding experience you will be welcomed on your arrival at the venue. The sequence of events will be explained with an additional safety briefing before proceeding to the kennels to meet the ever excitable huskies.
Once at the kennels you will be able to observe the dogs being harnessed, (and maybe have a try yourself if you wish), and also the preparation of the dog sled cart. Your team will consist of 6 to 8 dogs to ensure you feel the action packed sport of dog sledding.

After all the dog team is harnessed, it is time to fit your helmet and get you seated in the cart. This is also the perfect opportunity for a few photos.
The musher will stand on the back of the cart and it is all systems go and your excited team of huskies will take off, eager to give you the dog sled ride of a lifetime. Ride times may vary depending on the dogs, weather conditions on the day, and which trail is used.
After your thrilling ride, you will arrive back at the dog yard, where the dogs harnesses are removed and a drink and treat is given to the team.
Finally, it is time for a relaxing warm drink and an opportunity to discuss the experience and the sport with the mushers and dog handlers.
