Fishing on Sydney Habour

Reporter: Sally Obermeder

Sal is learning to fish on Sydney Harbour with the help of Craig McGill, our Sydney Weekender regular who knows our harbour like the back of his hand and Leeann Payne, a fishing expert from Queensland.

Fishing

About one million people fish at least once a year in NSW. When you are fishing in NSW - whether in freshwater or saltwater, hand lining, trapping, prawn netting etc you need to pay the recreational fishing fee before you go fishing.

You can pay the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee for three days ($6), one month ($12), a year ($30) or three years ($75). This can be bought from fee agents (most fishing tackle shops), online or by phoning 1300 369 365. All money raised by the recreational fishing fees is placed into the Recreational Fishing Trusts and spent on improving recreational fishing in NSW.

Before you go fishing, find out if the waters are closed to certain types of fishing methods or the use of certain types of fishing gear. If you're planning to fish from a charter boat or go with a fishing guide, ask the operator if you're covered by their exemption certificate. If the operator has paid an annual fee, you may not need to buy your own fishing license.

Fishabout Tours

Craig McGill runs Fishabout Tours and he shows people the spots in and around Sydney Harbour where you can expect to find certain fish and how to ‘lure’ them in.

Fishabout Tours guides have spent many years fishing Sydney’s waterways and have built up an intimate knowledge of species, locations and seasons. The local knowledge of Sydney’s Hot Spots and what species are biting is put to your advantage.

The day is spent aboard Fishabout’s new 4.7, 5.5 and 6.1 metre boats and includes:

  • All Tackle
  • Guidance & tuition
  • Large lure selection
  • Light refreshments
  • All bait

Whether a total novice or an experienced angler, trips are tailored to meet your objective.
