Explore Port Hacking

Host: Mike Whitney

Port Hacking is one of Sydney’s most beautiful waterways… and there’s loads to do on and in the water.

Eco Cruise

Jump aboard the Port Hacking Explorer II for an interactive eco cruise. Starting from Cronulla Public Wharf, you can relax in the informal atmosphere of the Port Hacking Explorer II, whilst exploring the Port Hacking River.

The first stop is Deeban Spit to interact with the local pelicans and other birds. Then the tour visits the secluded beach of The Meadows, which is only accessible by boat and from this point the tour enters the edge of the mangrove forests, where a guide will talk on the ecology of the mangroves and the wildlife that inhabits the estuary of Muddy Creek.

The cruise then ventures to Audley Weir, the gateway to the Royal National Park which is the end of navigable water and marks the fresh water section of the Port Hacking River. Here you can disembark for 3.5 hours and explore everything historical Audley has to offer.

Activities include:

  • Bushwalking
  • Mountain bike hire for the Lady Carrington Drive forest trail
  • Row boat hire
  • Bird watching
  • BBQ or café lunch on the riverbank

If you prefer, you can stay onboard and enjoy an ice cold beer or a glass of chilled wine whilst the boat cruises by some of Sydney’s most magnificent waterfront properties and listen to the commentary provided on the journey back to Cronulla.

On the morning or afternoon cruise you can order lunch from the Cronulla Eco Cruises menu.

Audley Boatshed – Canoeing and Kayaking

Audley is a string of grassy flats along the Hacking River and Kangaroo Creek in the Royal National Park, just south of Sydney. Saltwater and freshwater meet at the Audley weir and the area plays host to a rich variety of plant and animal species. This has long been recognised by the Dharawal people, whose traditional occupation of the area stretches back many thousands of years.

Audley is the oldest area in Royal National Park developed for recreational purposes and it has been a popular pleasure ground for Sydneysiders for more than a century.

Its dance hall, picnic pavilion, boat shed and other buildings reflect this historical development, as do the ornamental trees and other plants found in the area.

When the Eco Cruise drops you off at Audley, pop into the boatshed and hire a boat, canoe or kayak. This is a great way to explore the waterways of Port Hacking.
